Everybody has their favorite places to go out and eat. There is usually a favorite for Mexican food, Chinese food, and good old apple pie. Sometimes these favorites are found by accident. Other times they are like a family tradition. Parents take their kids, and the kids grow up and take their kids. Often times restaurants are referred to as hole’s in the wall. Urban legend has it that hole’s in the wall, have the best food. If the food is consistently good, people will stay very loyal to their favorite restaurants.
Being that familiarity is one of the things, besides good food, that draws people to certain places, it stands to reason that some people may forget to be aware of other factors. Things that could make some people, unwittingly take a risk with their health. In fact they may get sick on occasion, after eating at their favorite pizza joint, and not suspect the pizza place at all.
The first and obvious thing to look for at any place that serves food, is their letter grade. Almost twelve years ago there was outrage after a news station did a report on the conditions of some popular eateries. After some shocking discoveries, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, passed the restaurant ordinance, which included the grading system. There is typically ten points in each letter. The best grade any restaurant can get is an A, while the lowest is a C. An A grade, is good, but it can still mean there are some sanitation issues, and possibly some unhealthy practices going on. Because there is no way of knowing what violations could have been found, the law requires the owner of the establishment to show the detailed report to any customer who asks to see it. If a restaurant has a B grade, eating there would be at your own risk. The grade C usually has the restaurant closed until it can pass inspection.
The restaurant grading system gives consumers some valuable information about the place they are considering having a meal at, but it’s only the first step. Being aware of the overall appearance of the restaurant, the condition of the equipment and dining area, and even the attitude of the employees, plays another big role in staying as healthy as possible. Even the location of the restaurant can be a factor when choosing a place to eat.
If there is any immediate doubt or questions about the cleanliness, or condition of the restaurant, it is probably wise to re-think eating there. Common sense and instincts should also be used, when dining out. When ordering the food pay attention to the server and their hygiene. When the food is served, it should be fresh, and at the proper temperature. Most of all trust your gut, it will serve you well, if you serve it well.
